Hall technique
The video below demonstrates how the non-invasive method with stainless steel crowns can be performed for caries treatment (Hall technique). This is a scientifically proven method that does not require the use of a contra-angle and anesthesia. The caries lesions are sealed using the stainless steel crown and glass ionomer cement (GIC).
Method
Good preparation is half the job. Make sure the child is aware of the steps of the procedure. Show the crown to the child and explain that it is a 'pirate' or 'princess' crown.
- First, separation elastics are placed ('chewing gum elastic'). These must be left in place for at least four hours.
- Before the crown is fitted, it is important that the throat is protected with gauze to prevent aspiration or swallowing.
- Try on ready-made crowns and choose the smallest possible.
- The crown is dried and filled with glass ionomer cement (Fuji Envolve from GC)
- The tooth must be cleaned and dried as best as possible.
- When placing the crown, you can have the child bite down, but it is preferable to press the crown into the right place yourself.
- Provide good instruction to parents. It may take a few days to get used to it because the crown pushes against the gums and the occlusion has often changed (bite elevation). Sometimes it takes up to three months for the bite to return to normal.
Contraindications
- If good cooperation with the child is not possible, this technique is not recommended. The risk of aspiration or ingestion is too great.
- When aesthetics seem unacceptable.
- Placing two crowns next to each other in one sitting or two crowns opposite each other in one sitting.
